    Hard to detect, prostate cancer affects around 54,000 people each year in France. If the disease can develop for no apparent reason, certain risk factors such as age, family history and ethnicity significantly favor its appearance.

    Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and in the general population. The National Cancer Institute () counted 54,000 new cases in France in 2011. This cancer develops from cells which multiply in an anarchic way until forming a malignant tumor. The most well-known symptoms include frequent and sudden urination, especially at night, as well as difficulty peeing and a feeling of half-full bladder.

    If this disease is difficult to detect, especially at the early stage, there are a number of risk factors capable of promoting the disease. Keep in mind, however, that prostate cancer can develop in men who have none of these factors.


    The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age. At the time of diagnosis, the average age is almost 70, and the disease is not very common in those under 50.


    Family history plays an important role. The fact that a loved one developed the disease before the age of 60 seems to increase the risk. Research has also shown that the presence of breast cancer in the immediate family is a risk factor, reports the British site.

    The food

    A diet high in fat, especially animal fat, red or processed meat, and dairy products, is linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer. Additional studies are needed to fully understand this link.


    Exposure to pesticides, including chlordecone, could increase the risks. In farmers, for example, this factor can add to a family history. This association needs to be studied in detail in order to better understand which chemicals are the most dangerous.
